Minnesota Marriage Licensing Facts:
- You must have the license with at the
time of the wedding.
Out of state licenses are not legal in Minnesota. Nor is a license from
Minnesota legal in another state.
- While marriage licensing is
controlled by the state it is managed by the county.
- You may apply for a license in any county and the license is valid in any
county within the state.
- Most counties
allow the changing of both licensee's legal names free on the marriage
license.

Hennepin county will not allow the groom to change his name

There is a five day statutory waiting period on all licenses, however Hennepin
County will print your license while you wait, with validation dates.

- You must apply for the license in person, if one of the parties is
not present,
their signature must be notarized.
Not all counties require both signatures.
License is valid for six months from
issue date.
No refunds are issued on unused licenses at any time.
Social
Security Number for both parties is required.
- If either or both applicants has/have been
married previously, information regarding termination of the most recent
marriage is required at time of application.

If the most recent previous marriage was terminated by death, the exact date,
as well as the state and county in which the death occurred,
-
must be provided.
- If
termination was by divorce or court annulment, the exact date, county, state,
and type of court are required. If termination by divorce or
- legal annulment
occurred within 30 days of the date of application, a certified copy of the
decree must be presented for viewing.

- Minnesota State law mandates witnesses be at least 16 years of age.
Witness may be male or female.
