 FAQ's

FACTS

1. When should I get my license?

Marriage in Minnesota is state controlled, but managed by the county.

Licenses are only good for six months.  I always suggest you get your license no sooner than three month before your wedding:  This gives you leeway in either direction in case of the unforeseeable.

  2. Where can I get my license?

Your Minnesota marriage license can be purchased in any county and used in any county.

In any county in Minnesota, at the same facility for any license renewal, Drivers, Auto Tabs etc.

  3. What does a license cost?

There is no office of
JUSTICE OF THE PEACE

$100. But with the pre-marital counseling discount its $30. with a $5. filing fee.

  4. I just want a JP to perform my wedding....

The only thing a minister or judge needs to hear in order to sign your license is that you each are "freely entering into the marriage"

There are no Justice of the Peace in Minnesota.  The office was abolished around 1935.  You must be married by a Minister or a Judge.  Anyone calling themselves a JP is either an internet ordained Minister or faking it.

    5. How do I know the minister I select to perform my wedding is real?

Officiant tipping is at Bride and Groom discretion.  A good beginning is $50.

I have been tipped up to two hundred dollars. Tipping is also a privilege of your parents and attendants. I mention this because I am often asked,  "My mom wants to know.."

$25 each for
string quartets

$50. for the DJ

Most cake and
floral delivery $10 to $20

Again All Tipping is at your
discretion

All religious affiliated persons performing weddings must register with the state (through the county).  The county then records the persons name in the registry and provides the person with the  page and book in which they are registered. You can ask the person you want to hire for that information, call the county and confirm that they are registered.

Denominations don't count because the nation is founded on religious freedom.

     6. What should I expect from a minister?
This depends on what you are paying.  I have heard of inexpensive ministers who show up on the day, do a short wedding of their own.  Get paid and depart.

Amazing Grace provided complete services and believes any one charging like prices should also.

    7. What if my officiant doesn't do rehearsals?
